Small town charm. Big city pleasures.
Prescott combines all the amenities of a big city with all the charm of a small Western town. Victorian-era buildings and chic, new restaurants seem equally at home in this scenic city, which is surrounded by ponderosa pines, expansive grasslands, lakes and the famous Dells. With its mild, four-season climate, glorious setting, and year-round recreation, Prescott has consistently been named as one of the best places to live by national publications.
History:
Rich in history, Prescott is part of the saga of the American West. The town was founded in 1864, shortly after the discovery of gold in the area. Cowboys, settlers, and ranchers populated Prescott, which was named as Arizona's territorial capital. Today, the town continues to preserve its Western heritage along downtown's fabled Whiskey Row and in its historic districts, which contain beautifully restored Victorian-era homes.
Things to do:
There's always something wonderful to see and do in Prescott. Known for its antique stores, the city also boasts a wide array of art galleries, fine restaurants, and elegant hotels. In a nod to both its past and present, Prescott has an ultra-modern shopping mall as well as three museums with exhibits that explore Arizona's history. Those who love nature will appreciate the wealth of outdoor pursuits, including kayaking, canoeing, and sailing at Watson Lake and Willow Springs Reservoir.
Area Amenities:
Prescott offers the kind of wide-open spaces and outdoor activities for which the West is known. More than 450 miles of recreational trails wind through Prescott National Forest, where area residents can enjoy fishing, boating, camping, hiking, and horseback riding. If you prefer to simply relax, watch the wildlife, or take in the scenery, you'll find ample opportunities to do so. Granite Mountain Wilderness, also nearby, is a spectacular area for hiking and horseback riding.
